Jules Normandin founded the house J. Normandin-Mercier in 1872 in Chateau de la Péraudière near La Rochelle.
Brandy originated in the 17th century, because the normal wine during the long transport sour and thus undrinkable. The high alcohol content made this workable. The distillate must be diluted to the wine alcohol strength .
Cognac is made mainly three grape varieties grown in the Charente: Ungi Blanc or Trebbiano (90%), as well as Folle Blanche and Colombard.
Since 1930, the growing areas have been divided into 6 crus. The best cognacs are produced from Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne. If a cognac is made from more than 50% Grande Champagne and the rest Petite Champagne , it is called Fine Champagne.
