Summerdown Pure Mint
Sir Michael Colman had the idea of growing mint on his Summerdown Farm in Hampshire in the mid-1990s. At the beginning of the last century, England was famous for its mint. It was considered the best in the world. Between the two world wars, cultivation died out completely because other crops had to be grown. The mint industry had moved to the United States, to the West Coast. He sent his farm manager to California to learn all about growing mint. Back in England, it still took them over 10 years until everything was up to their standards. They planted the Black Mitcham Mint variety because it seemed the most suitable for mint oil production. And acquired the latest technology for distilling the mint oil. After years of experimentation, they succeeded in producing an oil that could be sold.
Today, a small percentage of the peppermint oil is used for the production of its own chocolate products, teas and room fragrances. The rest of the harvest is sold to the food industry. The packages of Summerdown Pure Mint chocolates are, how could it be otherwise, in mint green and are ideal as gifts or souvenirs.
