Drinking chocolate and cocoa

Drinking chocolate is probably one of the oldest beverages in the world. The Aztecs prepared the Xocolatl drink with ground cocoa beans and spices such as cinnamon and chilli and water. It was Christopher Columbus and other Spaniards who followed him who brought cows and thus milk with them to the new world. To be able to serve the cocoa with foam, they used a molinillo, a wooden whisk with round wooden discs. The whisk is rolled back and forth between both hands and the chocolate is frothed. It is then poured from the jug into the cups and drunk hot.

Since the Spaniards didn't like the original drinking chocolate because it wasn't sweet enough for them, they mixed it with sugar and milk. This is how today's drinking chocolate came about.
