Auro Chocolate

Auro Chocolate sources its cacao beans directly from farmers in Davao and not only makes its chocolate from bean to bar in the Philippines, but goes a step further by being involved in every step of the process.

The founders of Auro, Mark Ocampo and Kelly Go, first discovered the Philippines as a treasure trove of different varieties of premium cacao during a trip to Chicago in 2010. Mark and Kelly stumbled upon a small chocolate company that sourced their fine flavor beans from Davao, Philippines. Since then, Mark and Kelly's goal has been to showcase the Philippines as producers of fine cacao and artisan chocolate. Today, Mark and Kelly source a balanced blend of Forastero, Trinitatio and Criollo beans from the city of Davao and surrounding areas. The "Reserve Collection" from Auro, which includes the Tupi 70% bar, is designed to highlight specific areas in Davao and showcase the different flavors depending on where the cacao is harvested.

Pure Criollo cacao found its way into Philippine agriculture in the mid-late 17th century, when it arrived on Spanish merchant ships from Mexico. Since then, the island nation has become the most important cacao producer in Southeast Asia, with the majority of cacao production coming from the Davao region. Cocoa is one of the Philippines' key crops with growing potential in international markets. While the country produces and exports much of its own cacao, over 10,000 tons, it imports a much larger share of fermented cacao from other countries. This imbalance of production and importation of cacao is due to the mass production of chocolate confectionery in the Philippines. The Philippines is made up mostly of small farmers who supply small to medium manufacturers, and the country's demand for cocoa is far greater than what it can produce. And what's holding back increased production is, among other things, a lack of knowledge and equipment for post-harvest operations.

Auro has made it its mission to address and solve the common problems cocoa farmers face in the Philippines - from lack of infrastructure to poor farm management to post-harvest knowledge. Auro works with farmers in Davao by providing ongoing support in the form of training on international quality standards for cocoa and teaching them skills such as organic farming, post-harvest practices and basic business management.

In addition to its actions, the name of Auro pure gold. Kelly and Mark explain that the name was originally "Oro," which means gold in Filipino and Spanish, but they quickly realized that many companies in the Philippines were already using that name. Instead, the couple wanted to do something different, but still have the name reflect gold. The two took the chemical symbol for gold, AU, and added it to the Filipino "gold." Mark and Kelly explain further, "We believe that like gold, sometimes farmers and cacao are not given the value they deserve. Gold is not fully appreciated in its raw form, but with work, people see its true value."
