Gianduja was invented out of an emergency. On November 21, 1806, Napoleon issued the continental barrier over the British Isles, so that cocoa, among other things, became extremely expensive and could hardly be obtained. Innovative Turin chocolatiers therefore stretched the cocoa mass, with the Turin hazelnuts, which were in abundance.
