The island is located exactly on the equator and is about 200 km from the coast of Africa. The average annual temperature is 28°C on the coast and 20°C in the interior. The mountainous topography causes the hot and humid tropical climate with rainy and dry seasons. The rainy season lasts from October to May.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Sao Tomé and Principe was the largest cocoa producer in the world. Today, cocoa is still the most exported commodity (95%) in the country. Since 1975, the country has been independent and freed from colonial rule. The island nation is not a member of the World Trade Organization.
