The story of ÓBOLO begins more than 25 years ago, when Mark Gerrits, a young man from the United States, set out on a three-month vacation in Chile. Little did he know that this short backpacking trip would introduce him to the tastes, flavors and colors of Latin America - and that he would fall in love with the region and the people who cared for it. So much so that he never went home again!

Obolo Chocolates from South America

After living in Chile for a time, Mark moved to Ecuador in 2001 to work with cacao growing communities in the Amazon. There he discovered the joy of turning fresh cacao beans into chocolate, and he has taken that passion with him on his travels. He moved back to Chile in 2003.

As you may know, cacao is not grown in Chile. So after visiting several cacao producers in South America, Mark decided to source his cacao directly from the Pangoa cooperative in Peru, cutting out all the middlemen and paying the farmers a premium price. Since the goal was to produce chocolate completely Made in Chile and celebrate the ecological diversity and enchanting flavors of Chile, adds Obolo typical and local Chilean ingredients to the fine Peruvian cacao.
