Gianduiotto is made from the famous Tonde Gentili delle Langhe hazelnuts and is a nougat praline. The Turin specialty emerged at the time of Napoleon Bonaparte, when he imposed high (punitive) tariffs on cocoa.
A chocolatier came up with the idea of stretching the chocolate mass with hazelnuts. The new praline - a Gianduiotto was born. The mass was renamed Gianduja.
